Abstract | This paper asserts that the continuing decline in admissions to science and engineering graduate programs may lead to a shortage of skilled professionals that undermines the U.S. economy and to a shortage in higher education faculty. The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) provides academic activities and retention services to increase under-represented minority students success in attaining baccalaureate and graduate degrees in science, engineering, and mathematics. The University of Texas System LSAMP evaluation model was designed with input from the institutional research offices of its partner institutions. A description of the evaluation process and the most successful aspects of the academic program and assessment data are presented. Implications for future higher education partnerships are also outlined. (Contains 23 references.) (Author/SLD) |
